Basic Obedience Training

What is basic obedience?

Basic obedience training consists of the following commands: come, sit, down, stay, heel, and variations of all of these. Jim's basic obedience program utilizes repetition, positive reinforcement and lots of loving care. In addition to voice commands, Jim will teach your dog to respond to hand signals and body language.

When should training start?

Obedience training can start at any time. Contrary to popular belief, you can teach an old dog new tricks. However, the sooner training begins, the better. Problems such as housebreaking, chewing, and "jumping up" can easily be corrected if you start working with your dog as soon as he/she comes in to your home. Puppies can begin training at around ten weeks.

Why obedience train your dog?

A healthy relationship - Your dog is a companion, friend, and valued family member. Dogs that are trained to behave in a calm, relaxed manner are a welcome part of any household. Obedience training is the first step in establishing a positive relationship between you and your pet.

Safety - An obedient dog is a safe dog. Whether at home or away, your pet should be under control at all times. Obedience training will help to ensure your dog's safety and well-being.

Fun - Obedience training is fun! Dogs really enjoy pleasing their owners and leaning new skills. Training is always combined with play time and plenty of praise. Your dog will look forward to spending this special time with you and you will both be happier.

Responsible pet ownership - Sadly, over fifteen million dogs are destroyed every year. Over half are brought in by their owners because they were unable to control them. In contrast, a well-trained dog is always a pleasure to be around.
